Teaching Philosophy
As an educator of dance, my ultimate goal is to share my passion for movement with others and educate those I am lucky enough to share a room with to the best of my ability. I want to impact the lives of others through the medium that has changed my own. To achieve this goal, I bring knowledge from my own personal experiences and what I have studied into the studio to share with my students. In addition, I encourage my students to do the same: to bring their ideas, authenticity, and perspective into the space. I am a firm believer that everyone has something to share. Therefore, I foster an environment in which I can teach my students and they can teach me.
While I find that it is extremely important create an environment that is open and collaborative, I believe that the space I am creating also needs positivity and support. I find that an environment with these qualities enables dancers to feel comfortable enough to explore their artistry and take risks with their craft. In an attempt to build this environment, I encourage relationships between the dancers in the room. In addition to the relationship between the dancers, I put a lot of effort into my relationship with the dancers in the space. I try to get to know them as humans. This helps me to know which strategies to use to best educate them as dancers. By establishing relationships in the room among the dancers and myself, I create a safe space for dancers to come out of their shells and indulge in the art of dance.
While creating a collaborative, positive environment, I focus my classes on principles of confidence, control, connections within the body, and attention to detail. I infuse strategies that hint towards these principles within my classes, regardless of age, skill level, or years of experience. My teaching style incorporates the use of Bartenieff Fundamentals, imagery, and vocal emphasis to lead dancers towards understanding and obtaining these principles. Regardless of the style of class that I am teaching, I come into the space with an awareness that all students understand and learn at a different pace. With this awareness, I cater to many different learning styles and use many different strategies to best educate my students. At the end of the day, best educating my students is the number one goal in mind. I am a teacher that is focused on my students. It is through my students that I am able to fulfill my dreams of sharing my passion for dance with others.
